Next Steps
Based on my Phase 1 implementation and findings, I discovered that students thoroughly enjoyed writing in their journals and using iPads as a learning tool. Both activities provide the necessary level of structure to promote student engagement and learning. On the other hand, I found that more basic independent activities caused students to disengage more quickly and more often. For Phase 2, I plan to replace some of the less complicated independent literacy activities with more complex options and to add more writing-based activities as options. I also plan to give students the option to choose their activity whenever possible. For group activities, I plan to continue offering activities that give students an opportunity to interact with one another while promoting learning. With the iPads, I plan to introduce a new application each week based on my students needs. My primary objective for Phase 2 remains answering the question:
How will student engagement be affected by the addition of different literacy activities during independent work time? During Phase 2, I hope to discover how the integration of writing centers affects student engagement.
