Next Steps
My goal for Phase Two was to keep students engaged in literacy centers by adding writing tasks to the centers. My next steps for this particular classroom would be to continue implementing all of the literacy centers in lieu of free play because without the enticement of free play, students are putting more effort into their work. I observed that students enjoyed these activities and learned from them. I discovered through both phases that centers that have boundaries and structure are the most beneficial to having students remain engaged and learning during reading workshop.
Now that I have student data that demonstrates the type of literacy centers that appear to engage kindergarten students, I would want to add the aspect of student-selected goals into the literacy centers in order to meet students’ needs on an individual level. Working with each student, I would diagnose an area of need (i.e. fluency while reading, the /ea/ sound or using capitals and periods, for example). Then, the student and I would come create a goal related to their targeted area of need. Once goals have been established for each student, I would design literacy activities to help students practice their area of need and reach their goal. I would like to discover if setting goals with kindergartners would help further engage them in their literacy centers.
How will student engagement during literacy centers be affected by the implementation of individual literacy goals?
